Advanced Placement

When school starts, this section may contain assignments that will allow you to obtain extra credit.
It may also contain some very helpful content or assignments for both the English and AP courses.

Check the paragraph below for a list of books that should be read during the summer. You will be tested on this reading list during the first week of school.

Attention Advanced Placement students:
In order to adequately prepare for the class, I  strongly recommend that the following books be read this summer to enrich and supplement your AP coursework:
1. 30 Days to a More Powerful Vocabulary by Funk and Lewis. (This is a paperback with numerous exercises. Students will be expected to know the vocabulary for a quiz the first week of school).
2. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
3. Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad
4. Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison
5. The Handmaids Tale by Margaret Atwood
Students should take notes on novels #2and #3 relating to the theme of freewill, and on novels #4 and#5 on the theme of individual freedom and identity in society. Be prepared to show and discuss your notes on these novels during the first two weeks of school.
I also urge students to acquire the following paperbacks as extremely useful personal reference books for improving writing and research skills.
The Elements of Style by Strunk and White
The MLA Handbook 4th Edition
Have a safe and enjoyable summer. READ! I'm looking forward to having you in my class this fall.

Have a great and safe summer !
